Can You Make King’s Coronation Quiche With Ghee?
Lots of people up and down the country are preparing for the Coronation in a few weeks, including thinking of delicious things they could cook for friends and family to celebrate the historical event.
One thing they might want to turn their hand to is the Coronation Quiche, which is the official dish for King Charles III’s Coronation.
A new recipe has been launched as part of the Coronation Big Lunch, which is intended to bring together neighbours to celebrate the occasion.
However, as per usual with quiches, this dish contains a substantial amount of dairy, including butter, lard, double cream, cheese and milk.
For those who would prefer to swap their butter for organic ghee to reduce their dairy intake, the question is: could this be achieved with the Coronation dish?
You could certainly make a quiche without butter by simply baking a ghee-based pastry instead. For instance, this recipe from Happy Bellyfish suggests making a crust out of wholewheat flour, ghee and eggs, as opposed to butter, lard, milk and flour.
If you’re trying to cut down on dairy, the filling might be a problem though. You could still have the strong tarragon flavour with spinach and broad beans, but you would have to replace the cream, milk and cheese with a purely egg mixture.
All in all, you could create a variation of the King’s dish for your dairy intolerant friends, though it wouldn’t taste exactly the same.
Some vegan party foods you could serve on Coronation Day (May 6th) include aubergine and chickpea bites, teriyaki tempeh with peanut dip, and vegan mushroom pate on toast.
