Why Salmon And Ghee Are A Perfect Combination

The use of organic ghee as a cooking oil or butter has long been established in south Asia as part of the Ayurvedic tradition, but that does not mean its use can only involve cooking the traditional dishes of the region.

While ghee is great in curries and other spicy dishes that typify the cuisine of the region, it is also superb for cooking fish. After all, the Ayurvedic tradition is still strongly followed in parts of India and most of Sri Lanka, where there is lots of coastline and fishing going on and many communities from small villages to major cities located by the coast. Small wonder they have many fish dishes.

While the species caught in the region will not include salmon, there is no doubt that pan frying this kind of fish in ghee is a wonderful idea.

A particularly tasty combination is the Garlic Ghee Salmon. This involves adding garlic, lemon, turmeric and rosemary sauce to the mix and pan searing the fish fillet. With spinach leaves to add some healthy green veg and a bit of cream for extra taste, this will be a delicious meal with plenty of balance.

While ghee includes saturated fats, salmon is an oily fish full of healthy goodness; its fatty acids are great for heart and brain health, while it also offers plenty of protein and antioxidants. Vitamin-rich spinach is great for you too.

If you ever needed an endorsement of this combination, those who have devised their own versions of the recipe include former Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain, who has come up with a salsa verde version of a whole side of salmon cooked in ghee. It appears in her book Nadiya’s Fast Flavours.

So if you want to enjoy a delicious and healthy salmon meal, it seems the very best culinary experts from the south Asian traditions will endorse using ghee butter to cook it.
